Safe Work is for Life: 10 Years of Safe Driving with Jaskaranjit Singh

For Jaskaranjit Singh, safety doesn't start when he signs on for a shift at Torrens Transit's St Agnes Depot. It's a mindset that shapes both his work and personal life every day.

Celebrating 10 years behind the wheel and recognised as one of the company's top performers with a Green Roads Score of Green 1 and Best Scorer of Green Roads 2025, Jaskaranjit has built a reputation for putting safety first in everything he does.

Outside of work, he stays fit by going to the gym four to five times a week, which helps him stay physically prepared for the demands of professional driving.

"Safe work is for life"

This year's Safe Work Month theme, Safe Work is for Life, resonates strongly with Jaskaranjit.

"To me, it means ensuring the safety of myself and the public. Safe work contributes to a safer lifestyle due to the reduced risk of injury, which is more beneficial to a person's health because you don't have to worry about strain or overworking your body."

For Jaskaranjit, workplace safety doesn't end when his shift does. The habits developed on the job naturally extend into his everyday life.

"The safety precautions implemented by my workplace transfer into my everyday life as it becomes a habit to stay cautious and safe on the road even when I'm not working. Safety is not something to be taken lightly, whether it's in the workplace or in everyday life."

Lessons learned from a decade on the road

With a decade of experience in public transport, Jaskaranjit has seen firsthand why safety can never be taken for granted.

"In the last decade that I've been on the road, I've witnessed many crashes and each time the realisation of how important safety is gets reinforced. There is always a risk of crashes, but without the implementation of safety precautions, the risk is significantly higher."

These experiences have only strengthened his commitment to safe driving and following procedures every day.

Safety starts with the basics

When asked about the safety habit that has had the biggest impact throughout his career, Jaskaranjit's answer is simple.

"Constantly obeying road rules at all times and being aware of what is happening on the road around me."

It's a straightforward approach, but one that reflects the professionalism and vigilance required to safely transport customers every day.

Advice for new drivers

For anyone considering a career in public transport, Jaskaranjit believes one piece of advice stands above all others.

"Strictly adhere to road rules and safety precautions. Road rules are not optional to follow. They are put in place to ensure the maximum safety of all road users."

After 10 years of safe driving and industry-leading safety performance, it's advice that comes from experience.

As Safe Work Month reminds us, safety isn't just about preventing incidents at work. It's about building habits and behaviours that protect us, our colleagues, our customers, and our communities every day, on and off the job. Through drivers like Jaskaranjit Singh, that commitment to safety keeps Adelaide moving safely.
